Space Wolves Update and New Stuff!

I've gotten tired of waiting on the shoulderpads and decided to salvage what got messed up by the Army Painter primer.  Luckily I was able to get quite a few and only have three marines left over in need of some pauldrons.  This is where I attempted some freehand for the designs and it managed to turn out fairly well, as you can see below:

Winsor & Newton brushes are really the best and it helped a lot to use one doing something that required this much precision.  I was lucky to grab a few when Groupon had a $25 for $50 deal at Sam Flax :D
For the wolf head on the left shoulder pad, I attempted at first with the decals, but got annoyed with them pretty quickly.  So I decided to freehand those as well.
I've decided to try my hand at participating in a contest over at the WAMP forum, sponsored by Avatars of War.  I want to try my hand at some sculpting and building an elaborate base, we'll see how that goes, I plan to post updates of my progress on it!  Check out the contest here.  And on a plus for having a package actually get delivered to my place, I got the figure I plan on using for the contest, the Vermin Clan Lord!

  1. Impressive work! Your freehand skill is awesome. I do have to admit that your method of holding lots of minis is really well thought out. Wire and foam? Awesome.
I look forward to seeing shots of that Vermin Clan Lord!

    1. Thanks! The freehand on the wolves heads are pretty tough, especially trying to keep them at the same size.

I happened to have some foam lying around after building a bookcase and I've been meaning to find some way to hold up my minis and it ended up just the right thing!

  2. I found some better brushes really helped my painting. I found some good brushes and a fair price through Secret Weapon Miniatures. Does the foam and wire trick work well? I've been using dixie cups and it sort of works..

    1. Yep, better brushes definitely help out a lot! I've got a variety of brushes I managed to collect over the years, a variety of cheap synthetic brushes, clearance-cheap generic brushes at Michaels and they don't really work out well for some of the finer details or techniques I wanted to try out. The Winsor & Newton have been great so far, I can literally use a 1 size brush for tiny details.

My W&N 0 brush is starting to lose it's tip just a tiny bit right now. I admit, I am a bit of a brush abuser, but it was mainly to see how well the brushes can stand up to a variety of things I wanted to try. My next brushes I do plan on checking out Secret Weapon Miniatures for the Raphael brushes since I've heard a lot of good things about them as well.

The foam is really great to use to hold up miniatures when I'm not working with them. I had been trying to find some way to keep them up, such as wine cork tops. The wires help prop them up and if you see in the pictures, there's a loop where I can insert a finger to hold the wire while I need to paint without touching the miniature. Dixie cups sound like another good idea for holding up miniatures! I may just try that out later.
